Customer case: Ragn-Sells Häradsudden

New waste concept for more efficient sorting

The concept solution from Norditek has streamlined the sorting of mixed waste at Ragn-Sell's Häradsudden plant outside Norrköping. More waste goes to recycling and less to landfill.

- "We started renting the equipment three years ago and when we noticed how effective it was, we bought the machines," says Robert Wikman, section manager at the plant.

Erik Gustafsson and Robert Wikman from Ragn-Sells in Norrköping.

Ragn-Sells is one of Sweden's largest recycling companies with a turnover of more than SEK 3 billion and facilities all over Sweden.

Häradsudden outside Norrköping is one of the facilities that receives mixed waste from, for example, construction sites. Each year, the facility handles about 15,000 tons of mixed waste. A few years ago they started looking at a new sorting solution and Robert Wikman contacted Daniel Carlberg at Norditek.
- We had a good dialog about our needs and made an agreement to rent the equipment, a large shaker screen and two wind screens that were supplemented with conveyor belts and later an overband magnet (electro) to pick out the iron scrap. Later, we also tested an eddy current magnet to remove non-magnetic metals. We immediately noticed that this was a much more efficient solution than sorting out non-combustible/inert material with an excavator.

Optimizing sorting

Robert explains that the size of the mixed waste varies between 1-1000 mm and the coarsest is crushed before going through the sorting plant.
- Some of the waste is recycled as construction material (stone, concrete, tiles, etc.). The scrap metal eventually goes back to the smelter, the combustible becomes fuel and the rest goes to landfill. There is less of the latter now than before, which is the fruit of the new equipment combined with the fact that we have a very committed staff who make an effort to optimize the sorting.

Fast deliveries

Robert is also satisfied with the aftermarket service Norditek offers.
- The machine often runs two shifts and then there is a lot of wear and tear on parts that need to be replaced. If something breaks, Norditek is good at providing feedback and they have fast deliveries of spare parts.

Robert says that Ragn-Sells also has machines from Norditek at other recycling plants.
- In Vänersborg there is a screening line and at the plant in Bro there is a large shaker screen.

With the new waste management sorting concept from Norditek, more material can be recycled and less ends up in landfills. Boiler owners get a cleaner fuel with the right size for the right boiler, as well as lower operating costs and more consistent energy content. Norditek's new concept sorts the waste into three fractions with a flipflow screen, of which two fractions are wind sifted. The wind sifters remove heavy material such as stone, gravel, concrete, glass, etc. and the magnets can pick out metal in the heavy fraction. This fuel concept has been made possible by bringing together Norditek's many years of expertise in the development and manufacture of windscreens with waste screen suppliers from Germany and Ireland. Previously, only light materials and small fractions, 0-200 mm, were allowed to pass through the windscreen. But with the new version, even heavier materials such as stone and concrete blocks up to one meter in size can be run through the windscreen.
