Unique Sorting System Closes the Loop in Jönköping
Environmental Management in Jönköping has achieved something no other company has managed to do before: transforming solid digestate from the dry digestion of biowaste into a high-quality soil product. We at Norditek are behind this solution—“the only equipment supplier willing to take on the challenge”—when the municipality sought out potential partners.
The boss was convinced that they would pull it off
The assignment came as a clear political directive: the facility was to utilize the digested residue and produce soil for the municipality’s own needs. Even before the sorting facility was completed, Operations Manager Ulf Gustafsson was convinced that they would be able to do it—and he also insisted that the facilitybe “100 percent electric.”
The solution is based on several sequential sorting steps: two star screens, an air suction system, and a windshifter separate plastic and branches from the so-called “press cake.” The fine fraction is then fed to a flip-flow screen, where the lightweight plastic—which originally came from mis-sorted food waste—is vacuumed away.
The result was a pure compost fraction
The result was a clean compost fraction, which is then mixed with sand and recycled soil to create a finished soil product. Operations Manager Johan Lindström describes the compost quality as remarkable, given the condition of the unprocessed press cake at the outset. The soil already meets AMA’s requirements for soil used with ordinary plants, and SPCR 152 certification is the next step.
The municipality's Streets, Parks, and Forests Department is a satisfied customer: the topsoil has been used for lawns with good results, without any problems with weeds or invasive species.
Looking ahead, Miljöhantering in Jönköping aims to also sell sorted biofertilizer directly to farmers—a simpler product flow than soil production, since it does not require any additional components.
